Long Beach, CA – At its June 11, 2024, meeting, the Long Beach City Council will consider approving a Venue Use Guarantee with the Los Angeles Organizing Committee for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games (LA28). The Venue Use Guarantee is a critical step in solidifying the venues in Long Beach for the LA28 Games, scheduled from July 14, 2028, through Aug. 27, 2028. Potential Long Beach venues include the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center area, Marina Green and Alamitos Beach, and waterfront around the Belmont Shore Beach area, as well as Marine Stadium.

“By approving the Venue Use Guarantee, Long Beach is well-positioned to be the largest venue city outside of Los Angeles for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” said Mayor Rex Richardson. “We anticipate that our city will see a significantly larger event footprint for 2028 than in previous Olympics, ensuring Long Beach is featured on the world stage.”

In 2016, Long Beach signed the 2024 Venue Use Guarantee with the Los Angeles 2024 Exploratory Committee (LA 2024). Since then, LA 2024 has reorganized into LA28. The new Venue Use Guarantee reiterates Long Beach’s commitment as a Venue City for the LA28 Games by ensuring the availability of these designated venues for all event needs and outlines the terms and conditions for venue usage.

Following City approval of the Venue Use Guarantee, LA28 will continue to finalize the LA28 Games Plan for venues and events with the Host City of Los Angeles.

Additionally, Long Beach will continue to collaborate with LA28 to finalize specific dates related to phasing the use of each venue and further refine the areas to facilitate LA28’s site builds, operations and decommissioning while minimizing impacts on surrounding areas. The Venue Use Guarantee specifies that LA28 will be responsible for all operational costs incurred in connection with the production of the LA28 Games, including but not limited to: costs of constructing overlay that may be used for things like temporary structures; increased cleaning and waste management services; and enhanced security measures, unless otherwise covered. Specific reimbursement terms will be detailed in subsequent agreements for each venue.

As LA28 develops its event plans, staff will receive more details on resident impacts and access to public space. These plans will require review and approval by the Coastal Commission and are subject to change. A Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document has been developed to provide preliminary information on potential resident impacts and to inform and initiate community discussions. Outreach activities will be conducted in order to collect community input and feedback. More information regarding community outreach opportunities will be announced as dates and details are finalized.

During its May 14, 2024, meeting, the Long Beach City Council approved the Games Agreement with the Los Angeles Organizing Committee for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games (LA28), which made way for the consideration of the Venue Use Guarantee.

Information about LA28 Games events that will be hosted in Long Beach will be shared as details are finalized. The Venue Use Guarantee, which can be viewed here, includes specific requirements and visual representations of the potential venue areas.
