The City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services (Health Department) will host Superheroes Shield Up for School, a back-to-school vaccination and resource fair, from 3 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20, at the Main Health Facility (2525 Grand Ave.). This free superhero-themed event is focused on increasing access to life-saving vaccinations, including those required for schools; the event will also raise awareness of health and wellness resources available to the community.

"Vaccines are vital to ensuring a healthy and resilient Long Beach,” said Mayor Rex Richardson. “With this free event, we are able to prepare our students as they go back to school and educate our residents on other important resources available to them.”

This event will offer allvaccinesrequired for students entering transitional kindergarten, kindergarten and seventh grade,as well as COVID-19 vaccines for everyone ages 6 months and older. The event will also feature free food, back-to-school giveaways, games, bubbles, superhero-themed activitiesand a photo booth, as well as opportunity drawing incentives for those who attend and receive a vaccine. Vaccine appointments for the event can be made at longbeach.gov/immunizations, but are notrequired. Drop-ins are also welcome. 

While this is a back-to-school vaccine fair, vaccines will be available for all eligible people, including those 19 and older who are uninsured or underinsured, and those 18 and under who are uninsured, underinsured, have Medi-Cal or identify as Alaskan Native or Native American. 

Additionally, the event will feature informational tables with participating local community-based organizations and exhibitors. Attendees will have access to a wide array of health and wellness services and resources including developmental screenings, swim safety, early childhood centers and enrollment, mental health awareness for young children and the Health Department’s Sensory Area For Everyone(S.A.F.E.) vehicle, which will provide a safe and quiet space for all, especially those with sensory needs.
