The Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services, the LGBTQ
Center of Long Beach, the National Minority AIDS Council, and the
Southern California Men's Medical Group will host the Gay
Men’s Health Summit on Saturday, October 11, 2014 to address
gay and bisexual men’s health issues, including a troubling
and continuing rise in HIV and sexually transmitted infections. The
free summit is open to the public, and will be held from 8:30 am to
4:30 pm at the Courtyard Long Beach Downtown, 500 E. First Street,
Long Beach.
"The Summit will provide a forum for gay and bisexual men to
improve their physical, spiritual and mental health, and overall
wellness," Mayor Robert Garcia said.
Session topics will focus on stigma and homophobia, addiction and
recovery, coming out, healthy aging, relationships, faith and
spirituality, as well as the history of the gay movement
accompanied by a photographic exhibit by Thomas
Alleman.
Dr. Tony Mills of the Southern California Men’s Medical Group
will provide a lunch plenary session on pre-exposure prophylaxis
(PrEP) as a new biomedical strategy endorsed by the federal Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health
Organization, for specific high-risk HIV negative individuals to
reduce the risk of new HIV infections. October 11 is also National
Coming Out Day.
