Long Beach, CA – The City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services (Health Department) will host “Superheroes Shield Up for School,” a back-to-school vaccination and resource fair, from 3 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 12, at the Main Health Facility (2525 Grand Ave.). This free superhero-themed event will focus on increasing access to lifesaving, school-required vaccinations, as well as connect families to community health and wellness resources.
“Vaccines are vital to ensuring a healthy and resilient Long Beach,” said Mayor Rex Richardson. “With this free event, we are helping students prepare to return to school while also connecting residents with valuable health resources.”
This event will offer all vaccines required for students entering transitional kindergarten, kindergarten and seventh grade as well as vaccines for everyone ages 6 months and older. In addition to young children returning to school, vaccines will be available for:
- Adults 19 and older who are uninsured or underinsured
- Children and teens 18 and under who are uninsured, have Medi-Cal or identify as Alaskan Native or Native American
Vaccine appointments are not required but are available in both English and Spanish via MyTurn.
“Just like superheroes protect their communities, getting vaccinated is one of the most powerful ways for children to protect themselves and those around them,” said Health Officer Anissa Davis. “Together we are building a stronger, healthier future – one heroic shot at a time.”
The event will also feature free food, back-to-school giveaways, games, superhero-themed activities, bubbles and a photo booth, along with opportunity drawing prizes for children who receive a vaccine.
Families are encouraged to attend in their favorite superhero attire. Informational booths hosted by local community-based organizations and service providers will also be available, and attendees will have access to services such as developmental screenings, swim safety education, early childhood enrollment and mental health resources for young children. Additionally, the Health Department’s Sensory Area For Everyone (S.A.F.E.) vehicle will be on-site, offering a calm, inclusive space for people with sensory needs.
