UPDATE: The below press release was updated on April 22 at 1 p.m. The Older American's Got Talent Show taking place May 29 has been moved from El Dorado Park West to the Cal Rec Community Center at Ernest McBride Park (1550 Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave.).

Long Beach, CA – The City of Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM) will celebrate Older American’s Month, recognized nationally each May, by offering a wide variety of free activities throughout the city for adults ages 50 and above.

"We are committed not only to celebrating our older adult community and their incredible contributions, but also supporting them with opportunities to enhance their lives through improved wellness, social connections, and enriching activities and programs,” said Mayor Rex Richardson “We invite our entire community to join us in honoring our older adults as we recognize May as Older American’s Month at our Tuesday, May 13 Long Beach City Council Meeting."

During the month of May, adults ages 50+ can enjoy a wide range of activities, including arts and crafts, pickleball, a carnival, movie nights, dinner and dance, a Senior Safety Summit, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month celebrations, and a talent show.

Pre-registration is required for the following activities, as space is limited. Those interested can pre-register at any City of Long Beach Senior Center during normal business hours. 

  • May 7 - Senior Safety Summit at Houghton Park (6301 Myrtle Ave.): Held in partnership with Long Beach Aging Services Collaboration, this event will provide attendees with safety demonstrations, vendor products and resources to improve their safety and wellbeing.   • May 8 - Craft Expo at Houghton Park (6301 Myrtle Ave.): Attendees will enjoy an arts and crafts workshop in a creative and collaborative environment. People may call 562.570.1640 for more information.
  • Mary 17 - Pickleball Tournament at DeForest Park (6255 DeForest Ave.): While pre-registration is required to participate, this event is open to the public to watch. People may call 562.570.3500 for more information.
  • May 21 - Sunset Rodeo Dance and Dinner at Expo Center (4321 Atlantic Ave.): Attendees will enjoy an evening of music, dance, food and fun. People may call 562.570.1618 for more information.
  • May 29 - Older Americans Got Talent Show at Cal Rec Community Center at Ernest McBride Park (1550 Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave.): Attendees will enjoy an evening of music, dance, theatrics and talents performed by fabulous older adults. Sign-up for an audition slot is required prior to the event. The Talent Show will be open to the public. Please call 562.570.3225 for more information.
