Long Beach, CA - The City of Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM) will offer Nature Kids Discovery summer camp programs at El Dorado Nature Center, beginning June 21. Registration for each one-week session begins May 11 at 8 a.m. online and in person.

Children will experience nature through investigation, and fun hands-on activities, games and crafts.

Classes will take place Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to noon. Mandatory daily check-in will be held between 9:45 and 10 a.m. for sign-in and health screenings.

Registration for each one-week program begins Tuesday, May 11, at 8 a.m. on the LB RecConnect online catalogue, located on the LBparks.org webpage, and in person at El Dorado Nature Center, located at 7550 E. Spring St., Tuesday through Sunday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Online and in-person registration will remain open until program weeks reach capacity. The cost is $100 per week session. Enrollment must correspond with the participant’s current grade level; corresponding birthday specifications are listed under each program week. 

Nature Kids Discovery summer sessions are scheduled as follows:

  • STEMagic (course #47115)
    • TK and first grade, ages 4 to 6
    • June 21 - June 25 
    • Calling all dragon trainers and unicorn tamers! Join the quest to concoct magic solutions, make dragons fly, and design a way for damsels to save themselves. Child's birthday must be between Sept. 1, 2014 and Dec. 2, 2016
  • Snug as a Bug Under a Leaf (course #47116)
    • TK and first grade, ages 4 to 6
    • June 28 - July 2 
    • Let's roll like roly polies and wiggle like worms as we explore the Nature Center to discover the secrets of its littlest creatures. Child's birthday must be between Sept. 1, 2014 and Dec. 2, 2016.
  • What’s Hidden Below (course #47117)
    • Second through fourth grade, ages 7 to 9
    • July 12 - July 16 
    • There are creatures in the Nature Center that we don’t see on our normal treks. Join us as we focus on the areas that we often pass by to observe unique animal behavior in unusual locations. Child's birthday must be between Sept. 1, 2011 and Aug. 31, 2014.
  • ABC Ya Later Alligator Lizard! (course #47118)
    • TK and first grade, ages 4 to 6
    • July 19 - July 23
    • Explore nature and romp through the alphabet with animal activities, crafty creations and silly stories. Child's birthday must be between Sept. 1, 2014 and Dec. 2, 2016.
  • Habitat Heroes (course #47119)
    • Second through fourth grade, ages 7 to 9
    • July 26 - July 30
    • Opossums, bugs, birds and slugs! What animals live in your neighborhood? What do they need to survive? Become a Habitat Builder and help provide for all their basic needs. Child's birthday must be between Sept. 1, 2011 and Aug. 31, 2014.
  • Need For Speed (course #47120)
    • TK and first grade, ages 4 to 6
    • August 2 - August 6
    • Do you think you can run faster than a rabbit? Why are fish such great swimmers? Take a closer look at locomotion and all the unique ways animals get around the Nature Center. Child's birthday must be between Sept. 1, 2014 and Dec. 2, 2016.
  • It’s Way better with Water (course #47121)
    • Second through fourth grade, ages 7 to 9
    • August 9 - August 13
    • There’s no better way to battle the heat of a summer day than with a little water play. Join us as we explore all the fun and sciency things to do with something we can’t live without, H20! Child's birthday must be between Sept. 1, 2011 and Aug. 31, 2014.
  • Wild and Messy (course #47122)
    • TK and first grade, ages 4 to 6
    • August 16 - August 20
    • Get ready for some fun as we get our hands a little dirty.  We will create mud paintings, dig for worms, and build a shelter with hand-made bricks.Child's birthday must be between Sept. 1, 2014 and Dec. 2, 2016.

To ensure the safety of all camp participants and staff, Nature Kids Discovery will adhere to the following COVID-19 safety protocols:

  • Health screenings for participants and staff, including temperature check.
  • Limiting the number of participants in each camp.
  • Maintaining no larger than a 14:2 participant-to-staff ratio.
  • Implementing physical distancing protocols, including at check-in and checkout.
  • Cleaning and sanitizing facilities multiple times each day.
  • Cleaning and sanitizing all high-touch areas frequently.
  • Requiring face coverings for participants and staff.
