Long Beach, CA – Beginning Monday, Aug. 28, 2023, the Long Beach Public Library (LBPL) will offer an additional day of service on Mondays at three neighborhood library locations – Alamitos (1836 E. Third St.), Harte (1595 W. Willow St.) and Michelle Obama (5870 Atlantic Ave.) – with two additional locations anticipated to begin in late September. This expansion of service is the result of structural and one-time enhancements to Library Services in the amount of $1.25 million as part of the City’s Adopted Fiscal Year 2023 Budget approved by the City Council and represents the most significant expansion of LBPL services since 2007.

“With five of our Long Beach Public Library locations extending their hours, we are giving our community members more opportunities to access the rich and diverse resources that our libraries offer, such as books, educational and cultural materials, and entertainment options,” said Mayor Rex Richardson. “We are committed to providing more direct services that connect people with these valuable amenities.”

With the additional day of service on Mondays at five locations, Long Beach residents will enjoy increased access to vital educational materials, community programs and recreational library resources. LBPL will continue to promote life-long learning, curiosity and access to explore interests that enrich the community.

Beginning Aug. 28, Alamitos*, Harte and Michelle Obama Neighborhood Libraries will operate six days a week under the schedule listed below:

  • Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, noon to 7 p.m.
  • Wednesdays, noon to 6 p.m.
  • Fridays and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Burnett (560 E. Hill St.) and El Dorado (2900 Studebaker Rd.) Neighborhood Libraries are anticipated to begin Monday operations in late September and will follow the same six-day schedule noted above. An exact date will be communicated once determined.

“We are grateful to the City Council for enabling us to expand library access for our residents,” said Director of Library Services Cathy De Leon; “Libraries are such a vital resource for all and by expanding of hours we can continue to support our community with educational and enriching resources and computer access.”

These locations were selected for expanded service based on a variety of factors, including geographic distribution, socioeconomic indicators and redundancy of service within regions. The seven remaining LBPL locations will continue with their existing five-day operational hours. The complete list of LBPL locations and operating hours is available at lbpl.org.

*During the closure period for Bay Shore Library renovations, Alamitos Library will offer a six-day service. Upon Bay Shore’s reopening, six-day service will begin at Bay Shore Library and Alamitos will resume its five-day service operations.
