The Long Beach Public Library’s (Library) annual Summer Reading Program kicks off Saturday, June 10, and invites readers of all ages to “Find Your Voice” by reading, completing activities and enjoying special events and programs at all 12 Library locations. The Summer Reading program runs from June 10 to August 12, and encourages participants to read by awarding incentives for every five days they read, with extra incentives for completing activities and writing book reviews.
"Discover a captivating world of reading for everyone, of all ages, through our Summer Reading program,” said Mayor Rex Richardson. “It's a delightful, and educational experience that nurtures a lifelong passion for learning and literature.”
This year’s program launches with a performance by Boxtales Theatre Company at the Billie Jean King Main Library on June 10 at 11 a.m., courtesy of the Music Center Los Angeles’ ArtsGrown L.A. program. To entertain audiences of all ages, each Library location will also host performances throughout the summer, including magic shows, musical performances, wildlife encounters, and much more. For teens and adults, the Library is hosting workshops, book talks, poetry programs and other events that will inspire participants to find their voices. To see the full calendar of Summer Reading events, visit the Library’s website at lbpl.org.
Registration for Summer Reading begins June 10, in person at any Library location or online. Residents can register and begin participation at any time during the program but the earlier the registration, the more incentives participants can earn.
“Summer Reading is an engaging way to inspire families and young people to keep reading year-round, which is key to keeping skills sharp as students return to school in the fall,” said Director of Library Services Cathy De Leon. “We encourage readers to learn and grow by offering special events, prizes, activity ideas, and reading recommendations to participants of all ages.”
The Summer Reading Program is made possible in part by the Long Beach Public Library Foundation and the Friends of the Long Beach Public Library. These contributions enable the Library to offer books and other incentives to program participants, as well as provide special performances by professional family entertainers and educators.
