Solar Canopies being Installed at Public Parking Facilities

Release Date: 2021-05-13

The Public Works Department has begun the installation of solar canopies at three Downtown Long Beach public parking facilities. As part of the City’s solar energy Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with PFMG Solar Long Beach, this citywide solar energy project aims to install solar panels at various public facilities around Long Beach. This two phase Energy Efficiency Infrastructure Project is scheduled to be complete by spring 2022.

Phase one includes the construction of solar canopies on the rooftops of public parking facilities City Place A (50 W. 6th St.), City Place B (50 E. 5th St.) and City Place C (50 E. 3rd St.). The solar energy system totals 415.2-kilowatts, with the ability to generate electricity equivalent to power 60 homes. This renewable energy infrastructure is projected to reduce the City’s carbon footprint by 530 tons – helping the City meet its goal of carbon neutrality by 2045.

As an added bonus, the rooftop installation will provide covered parking for about 130 vehicle spaces – improving the public parking customer experience.
