Celebrate Earth Week!

Long Beach, CA –In celebration of Earth Week, the City of Long Beach will host a series of fun, free and family-friendly events for residents to enjoy. Earth Day began in 1970 to bring attention to environmental issues and has since spread to weeklong events and celebrations around the world. This year’s activities will offer participants the opportunity to learn more about how the collective community can integrate sustainability into daily life.

“I am thrilled that so many of our City departments are combining their efforts to host these family-friendly environmental events in honor of Earth Week,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “Sustainability and being eco-conscious are important to us all and I encourage our residents to participate in these events and learn more about how they can help Long Beach become greener, healthier and more sustainable.”

Earth Day Coastal Cleanup

Saturday, April 16, 10 a.m. to noon – Join the El Dorado Nature Center team for a coastal cleanup on the sand east of Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier. No preregistration required. Participants are encouraged to bring their own bucket or bag to further reduce our collective footprint. Rain cancels. Call 562.570.1745 for more information.

Earth Week Resource Fair

Tuesday, April 19, 6 to 7:30 p.m. –This free event at the Billie Jean King Main Library (200 W. Broadway) will include interactive and informational tables staffed by various City Departments, games, giveaways and do-it-yourself sustainability activities. The City’s Youth Climate Ambassadors will share information about the City’s first-ever proposed Climate Adaption Action Plan (CAAP). This event welcomes participants of all ages.

Picture this! Recycled Cardboard Art

Wednesday, April 20, 3 to 5 p.m. – Join Long Beach Public Library at the Bay Shore Neighborhood Library (195 Bay Shore Ave.) for an art program for kids using recycled cardboard. There will be a 95% chance of getting messy, so play clothes are recommended. All ages are welcome, but projects and lessons will be geared toward school-aged kids.

Earth Day Storytime

Friday, April 22 – Join us at El Dorado Neighborhood Library (2900 Studebaker Rd.) for stories, songs and activities. Toddler Storytime, 9:30 to 10:15 a.m., suitable for ages nine months to 3 years. Preschool Storytime, 10:30 to 11:15 a.m., suitable for ages 3 to 5 years. Advance registration is not required. Space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Fun with Worms Composting Workshop

Friday, April 22, 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. – Join LB Recycles at the Burnett Neighborhood Library (562 E. Hill St.) for a family-friendly workshop where participants of all ages will learn how to turn food scraps into a valuable soil amendment for a garden or landscape. The workshop will focus on vermicomposting – composting with worms – and is a great method for apartments or homes with small yards, patios or indoor space.

Recycle Right Workshop

Saturday, April 23, 10 to 11:30 a.m. – Join LB Recycles at the Michelle Obama Neighborhood (5870 Atlantic Ave.) for a workshop focused on the City’s curbside recycling program to learn what can and cannot be recycled and how to prepare trash and recyclables.
