Love Your Block

The City of Long Beach, in partnership with Bloomberg Center for Public Innovation at Johns Hopkins University, launched Love Your Block, a community-driven initiative that empowers residents to take action and enhance their neighborhoods. With this partnership, Long Beach joins a national network of cities committed to supporting resident-led efforts to create lasting, positive change.

Vision

A responsive and equitable Long Beach where residents, staff, and leadership work together to solve problems that impact quality of life, closing gaps in trust, outcomes, and opportunity.


Mission

The Office of Civic Innovation strengthens the City’s ability to deliver better results by helping departments improve performance, supporting staff to lead change, and ensuring that residents most impacted by city challenges shape the solutions.
 
We do this through problem-solving, data use, design methods, and public engagement that move Long Beach toward the goals in the 2030 Strategic Vision.

Goals

  • Civic Problem-Solving & Equity

Residents most impacted by inequities—and the community-based organizations that represent them—play an active role in addressing public challenges and shaping solutions that lead to lasting health, safety, and quality of life improvements.

What Success Looks Like:
    • Communities most impacted by disparities help define problems and co-create solutions
    • Services become more accessible, culturally responsive, and aligned with real needs
    • Residents experience improved conditions and have greater trust in local government

  • Performance Management & Results
City departments use outcome-based metrics, data-informed strategies, and community input to improve programs, align with the 2030 Strategic Vision, and track measurable progress.

What Success Looks Like:
    • Programs become more effective and show visible impact
    • Department leaders make decisions grounded in evidence and aligned to shared outcomes
    • City leadership can clearly communicate progress on strategic goals
  • Leadership & Capacity-Building
City staff across all levels are equipped with the skills, tools, and support to use data, improve services, and lead innovation and equity efforts within their departments.

What Success Looks Like:
    • Staff feel confident and capable of driving change and solving problems
    • Internal teams work collaboratively across silos and functions
    • The City fosters a culture of learning, accountability, and continuous improvement
