Long Beach, CA– Today, the City of Long Beach announced at its Building a Better Long Beach presentation that new development and construction activity continues to boom, with several major commercial and residential projects completed, currently underway or proposed throughout the city. The mid-day event presented by Mayor Garcia, and in partnership with the Long Beach Business Journal, at The Beverly O’Neill Theater in Downtown drew an audience of hundreds of community representatives including business leaders, real estate specialists, developers and local contractors and architects. 

“Long Beach is continuing to attract innovative, high-quality development and investment opportunities with everything our city has to offer,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “We’re incredibly excited about the wide range of projects underway across Long Beach from housing and more affordable units for our residents to modern office, retail and entertainment spaces that people can enjoy for decades to come.” 

Long Beach's economic outlook is bright with construction and investment continuing to increase to pre-pandemic levels. The average unemployment rate is just 4.6%. Housing shortages are being addressed, and 3,997 residential units are in the pipeline. 

The event showcased more than 15 high-profile projects that have been recently completed around the city. Among the finished projects were: Shoreline Gateway, a 35-story, mixed-use development that is now the tallest building in the city; the Shaun Lumachi Innovation Center; the Rocket Lab headquarters at Douglas Park; 5 Degrees North at the Streets, a multi-family residential project with retail space located at the revamped City Center; and Las Ventanas and Bloom at Magnolia, affordable housing developments offering units for individuals experiencing homelessness. 

Altogether there is $475 million in construction activity expected around the city through 2022, including major improvements to the Long Beach Airport; the new Long Beach Municipal Urban Stormwater Treatment Plant, known as LB-MUST; Broadway Block, a mixed-use development; and affordable housing complexes The Cove, Anaheim & Walnut and 26 Point 2. The designated landmark Breakers Hotel and Ocean Center Building located in the heart of Downtown are undergoing complete renovation. 

Key developments approved for construction include Civic Center Mid-Block, a mixed-use project to include a new grocery store; Armory Arts Collective, a new centerpiece for housing and performing arts; Calypso, a mixed-use, transit-oriented development; The Union, an affordable housing project with units reserved for extremely low-income households; and RTHM, a substantial townhome community in North Long Beach.  

Several more projectswere detailed that have been proposed and are under review. These include the new Shoemaker Bridge in West Long Beach; Mosaic, a mixed-use, inclusionary housing project; and two townhome projects to be located at 4501 Orange Ave. and 3655 Elm Ave. 

Additionally, the presentation highlightedefforts to reimagine the city’s gateway and coastal area with three mixed-use developments proposed at 6500, 6615 and 6700 E. Pacific Coast Hwy. that will bring more than 1,360 new housing units and retail uses to the area, as well as a new office project to be located at 6701 E. Pacific Coast Highway.
