Long Beach, CA – The National Weather Service has issued a high-wind warning for the greater Los Angeles area beginning this afternoon, Tuesday, Jan. 7, through Wednesday evening, Jan. 8, with gusty winds continuing through the week. A high wind warning is issued when sustained winds of 40 mph or greater or gusts to 58 mph or greater are expected. This warning advises of a life-threatening, destructive, widespread windstorm for parts of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties that can produce power outages and dangerous fire weather conditions in high-risk areas.

While Long Beach is not expected to experience the most severe weather conditions, high winds are still anticipated locally, with 25 to 30 mph winds and gusts up to 40 mph expected tonight. Residents are urged to take precaution by following the below safety tips for before, during and after the windstorm:

  • Secure outdoor objects from patios and balconies ahead of time such as lawn furniture or garbage cans that could blow away and cause damage or injury.
  • Ahead of time, remove any dead trees or overhanging branches near structures, loose roofing materials and other objects in yards, patios, roofs or balconies that could blow away.
  • Stay indoors and away from windows; outdoor activities should be postponed during this time.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and watch for debris; tree limbs may break and street signs may become loose during strong wind gusts.
  • Keep pets inside and ensure they have a quiet, calm space to retreat to.
  • When driving, slow down, watch for objects blowing across the roadway, and keep a safe distance from cars in adjacent lanes as strong gusts could push a car outside its lane of travel.
  • Report downed trees by calling 562.570.2700 (option 4) or on the Go Long Beach website.
  • Report downed power lines by calling 9-1-1. Do not try to free lines or remove debris yourself and avoid anything that may be touching downed lines, including vehicles or tree branches.
  • Sign up for Alert Long Beach to receive free emergency notifications from the City of Long Beach.

The City has activated its Inclement Weather Center for tonight, Jan. 7, to provide people experiencing unsheltered homelessness with temporary low-barrier, safe and supportive emergency shelter for up to 60 people. Homeless Services Bureau staff are conducting outreach today to notify people experiencing unsheltered homelessness of the shelter opportunity.

As of the morning of Jan. 7, there are currently no impacts to commercial flights at Long Beach Airport however travelers should check their flight status with the airline.

Additionally, due to the high winds and low humidity expected during this windstorm, there is also concern for dangerous fire weather conditions in high-risk areas. Long Beach residents who work in or travel to high-risk wildfire areas should take extra precaution and prepare to evacuate, should the need arise.

For more information about weather conditions for specific areas of Los Angeles County and to stay up to date on this warning, people are encouraged to visit the National Weather Service website and follow on Facebook, X and YouTube.
