Long Beach, CA – The Long Beach Community Development Department has created concepts for a vision and feasibility plan for the new LGBTQ+ Cultural District and the community is invited to identify and prioritize which improvements are most important by completing an online survey.
The interactive survey provides examples of placemaking components, including lighting, wayfinding and signage, street furnishing, public art installations and landscaping. The survey will be available in various languages including English, Spanish, Khmer and Tagalog through Sunday, Nov. 19, 2023. Those with limited access to a computer or smart phone may visit a public computer lab available at any open Long Beach Public Library location to access the survey.
The goal of the LGBTQ+ Cultural District is to honor the LGBTQ+ community in Long Beach by activating the proposed district area located along the East Broadway Avenue corridor between Alamitos and Temple avenues. This will be done by highlighting the cultural and historical significance of the LGBTQ+ community in the district, supporting LGBTQ+ businesses and institutions and investing in public improvements to ensure the LGBTQ+ community continues to thrive.
In June 2023, the City released a preliminary plan for public review that details the community history and outlines the next steps for the initiative including suggestions received for neighborhood- and business-led activation opportunities. An in-person workshop was held last month to solicit community feedback on the proposed public improvements. Those who were not able to attend can view the materials that were presented by visiting the project website. This survey is an interactive way to participate in this process virtually.
