Long Beach, CA – The Long Beach Public Library is pleased to unveil its dynamic array of events and programs in observance of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month 2024, nationally recognized from May 1-31. This year’s local theme, A Bouquet of Cultures, celebrates the diversity and allure of Asian and Pacific Islander cultures through a plethora of engaging experiences that mirror the vibrancy of the community. All residents are encouraged to participate in honoring and delving into the rich cultural legacy of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
“Through diverse events and programs, we honor the rich traditions of Asian and Pacific Islander communities, fostering unity and appreciation," said Mayor Rex Richardson. “We invite community members to join us in these month-long celebrations in recognition of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.”
Kicking off the festivities for the third consecutive year is the eagerly anticipated Festival of AAPI Books (FAB), taking place on Saturday, May 4, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library. FAB promises a day brimming with literary delights, featuring engaging book discussions and author readings from over 15 esteemed AAPI authors, including Kaylin Melia George, author of "Aloha Everything," and Jenny Liao, author of "Everyone Loves Lunchtime but Zia." The highlight of the festival will be a keynote discussion featuring Pulitzer Prize winners Viet Thanh Nguyen and 2022 Rome Prize in Literature Gina Apostol, followed by a book signing session for attendees. Festival participants can browse and purchase books and treats from a variety of vendors, including Bel Canto Books, We Are Sunraised, and Kubo LB.
"As we honor Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we stand proud to offer programs that showcase the vibrancy and richness of Asian and Pacific Islander cultures,” said Library Director Cathy De Leon. “This month is not only about celebrating heritage but also about fostering connections and understanding within our community."
As AAPI Month unfolds, all 12 Long Beach Public Library locations will host a diverse range of free programs suitable for children, teens and adults. Among the highlights, attendees can enjoy an enchanting Polynesian performance by Mahana Company and a craft hour at the Billie Jean King Main Library on May 11 from 2 to 4 p.m. Additionally, local artist Stacy Wong will lead a series of art workshops across various library locations, inviting participation from adults and families alike. Teens can also engage in the AAPI Craft-It-Out Teen program, which focuses on mental health and wellness through the art of the Zen Garden, offering them the opportunity to create and take home a mini-Zen Garden.
