Long Beach, CA - Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM) will continue offering after school programs that safely engage youth and support learning and access to recreational opportunities throughout the winter months. Both the Community Learning Hub Program and After School Program begin Jan. 3 and will run weekdays through April 15. Registration for both programs begin Dec. 22 online and in person. 

Community Learning Hub Program 
Community Learning Hubs support kindergarten through eighth grade students enrolled in Independent Study through Long Beach Unified School District and provide access to after-school recreational activities. The free Learning Hubs provide a safe space with high-speed internet for students to complete distance learning assignments during the school day and the option to participate in safe and enriching after-school activities, including academic support, sports, fitness and more. 

Community Learning Hubs will take place weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the following Long Beach parks: 

  • Houghton Park, 6301 Myrtle Ave. 
  • McBride Park, 1550 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. 
  • Orizaba Park, 1435 Orizaba Ave. 
  • Veterans Park, 101 E. 28th St. 

Registration is required and will be available online and in person beginning Dec. 22. Online registration will be available on the PRM website at LBParks.org starting at 10 a.m. In-person registration will be available at the Hub sites, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Dec. 22 and by appointment after.  

All health and safety protocols will be implemented, and participants will be required to wear face coverings and adhere to physical distance guidelines. Participants must bring their own electronic device and lunch. 

The Community Learning Hub Program is made possible by federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding allocated under the Long Beach Recovery Act. The Long Beach City Council voted to adopt the Long Beach Recovery Act in March of 2021, becoming one of the first major cities to approve a COVID-19 recovery program utilizing ARPA and other federal funding. The Long Beach Recovery Act funds economic, public health and fiscal initiatives for Long Beach residents and business owners and addresses new and historic inequities, emphasizing high-risk populations and those individuals and business sectors hardest-hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.  All Long Beach Recovery Act information is on the City’s website at longbeach.gov/recovery. 

After-School Programs 
After-School Programs for children ages 5 to 12 will take place weekdays at the end of the school day at varying times per location. Participants will receive homework assistance and enjoy enrichment activities and new games that follow COVID-19 safety guidelines. Online registration will begin at 10 a.m. on Dec. 22 on the PRM website. In-person registration will also be available on Dec. 22 from 9 a.m. to noon at the following locations: 

  • PRM administration office, 2760 N. Studebaker Rd. 
  • Pan American Park, 5157 E. Centralia St. 
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Park Pool, 1910 Lemon Ave. 
  • Houghton Park, 6301 Myrtle Ave. 
  • Belmont Plaza Pool, 4320 E. Olympic Plaza  

Residents can make appointments to register in person after Dec. 22 by calling 562.570.3150. The After-School Programs are offered free of charge.
