The Davenport Park (Phase I & II) Project is comprised of two elements: the Landfill Gas Control System and a Park Expansion.
The Park Expansion project includes a sports field, fitness stations, outdoor seating areas, and additional parking spaces along E. 55th Way to enhance recreational activities and adult fitness.
The Davenport Park Project has involved multiple stages to address landfill gas (LFG) management, beginning in 2005-2006 with the installation of passive vents to collect gases such as methane. These vents were capped in 2012 due to concerns raised by the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD). In 2014, a temporary treatment system was established to reduce methane buildup and provide insights for a permanent solution. By 2017, a comprehensive underground liner and gas collection system were installed in the park’s western half (Phase II – Park Expansion Project area). The City of Long Beach then submitted an updated LFG Control System Workplan to the Local Enforcement Agency (LEA) in December 2019 to ensure public health and environmental safety, with the engineering and health and safety plans receiving LEA approval in mid-2020. Following rigorous review, SCAQMD granted the Permit to Construct/Operate in March 2022, allowing for the installation of a permanent treatment system with noise-reduction features and underground caisson removal for smoother surfaces on 55th Way and parking lots. In April 2024, an expansion added three extraction wells and perimeter probes in response to LEA’s monitoring data. Ongoing monitoring by AECOM includes weekly field checks and quarterly reporting to the LEA to ensure compliance and safety.

Latest Updates
October 2024 Update:
The City of Long Beach invites the community to celebrate the completion of the Davenport Park Expansion Project at a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2024 at 1 p.m. See flier for more details.
June 2024 Update:
Gas Control System
The Gas Control System was completed in December 2023 and is functioning as intended.
Park Expansion
Significant progress has been made on the project, with more than half of the work already completed. The contractor has finished laying the walkways, river cobbles, and borders, as well as planting trees and installing sod for the field and fitness equipment. Additionally, refurbishment work on the restroom facilities has commenced, while the playground area has undergone thorough cleaning. We anticipate that the project will be fully completed by early Fall 2024, barring weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
August 2023 Update:
Gas Control System
Unforeseen delays have caused a pause in the completion of the gas control system portion of this project. Construction for the Gas Control System part of the project resumed in December 2022 with a scheduled completion, barring further weather or other unforeseen delays, in Fall 2023.
Park Expansion
The City’s Contractor, Bitech Construction Company, Inc., has begun the Park Expansion portion of the project at Davenport Park in Summer 2023 with a scheduled completion, barring weather or other unforeseen circumstances, of Summer 2024. The park will be closed during this time.
The improvements will include:
- Install a multi-use sports field, fitness stations, and walking trail
- Improve infrastructure quality and ensure compliance with regulatory requirement
- Encourage outdoor and recreational experience
The contractor is scheduled to perform work Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Parking impacts for residents are not expected. Efforts will be made to minimize inconveniences and minimize construction activities during scheduled park activities.
The contractor encourages park patrons to keep children away from the construction areas and activities.
