Latest Updates - August 2023

Inspections and upcoming field work for the Naples Island Seawalls Assessments are scheduled between September 11, 2023 through September 29, 2023, Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Inspections will be performed by the City's consulting engineers, TetraTech Inc. and specialty diving company, American Marine Corporation.

Project Information

The upcoming Naples Seawalls Assessment is a supplemental evaluation following a 2008 assessment conducted by the City of Long Beach. This supplemental assessment will document the current condition of the seawalls system including the seawall cap, guardrail, and other elements of the City-owned property. The efforts will help identify areas of immediate concern, confirm and or update the priority assessment of seawall replacement phases, and identify and prioritize any localized repairs.

Inspections will be conducted by two expert teams: a landside inspection team and an underwater dive inspection team. Each team will work independently, but the underwater inspections will follow the Naples Seawalls In-Water Inspection Schedule. Landside inspections may take place on different days during the assessment period and may complete more quickly than its underwater counterpart. Each team, landside or underwater, will spend approximately 30 minutes at each property to complete the required inspection.

The waterside inspection will be completed by a dive team.  City staff is requesting private vessels to be temporarily relocated for the day to allow for unobstructed inspection access and safer working conditions. Waterside inspections are being phased to minimize disturbance to the residents with 10-12 properties are scheduled for inspection per day. A temporary slip or side tie will be provided by the City’s Parks Recreation and Marine Bureau.  To reserve temporary berthing during the day of inspection, please contact the Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine Department (PRM) Marine Bureau, Alamitos Bay Marina Office at 562-570-3215.  PRM will provide additional information and instructions to property owners/residents.

The information below supplements information provided by the Long Beach Public Works Department on June 6, 2023 to the members of the Naples Island Improvement Association and Seawalls Committee.  In addition, the Public Notice and Enclosures will be mailed to property owners and residents within the limits of work.
