Historic Pine Ave. Sign Unveiling

Release Date: 2017-03-24

City officials on Friday unveiled the new “Historic Pine Avenue” sign, a two-story high arch that stretches across Pine Avenue between 4th and 5th streets.

The sign was lit up during an illumination ceremony beginning at 7 p.m., just in time for sunset.

“The Pine Avenue sign is a wonderful addition to our downtown and something I have been looking forward to seeing for a long time,” Mayor Robert Garcia said in a statement. “The sign is a great way to pay tribute to Long Beach, and in particular Pine Avenue’s history.”

The sign melds the contemporary architecture in the downtown corridor with elements of the area’s past. For example, it features four historic images depicting Pine Avenue milestones, including a horse and cart common in the early 1900s to the Woolworth’s lunch counter, reminiscent of the 1950s.
