January 2024 Update
The City of Long Beach has received its Local Coastal Development Permit from the Long Beach Community Development Department in April 2023 and a Coastal Development Permit De Minimis Waiver from the California Coastal Commission for the project in July 2023. Additionally, in December 2023, the City was notified that the National Fish and Wildlife Fund South Coast Shoreline Parks and Outdoor Recreation Grants Program intends to award $150,000 for the project for the roller skate area, basketball court, shade structure, and planting of native landscaping.
The City is in the process of entering into contracts with a general contractor and is targeting a January 2024 construction start. The City expects the project to be substantially complete with the sports courts and skating area, barring weather or other unforeseen delays, by May 2024. Additional work associated with native landscaping may be postponed to align with seasonal planting schedules for local habitat.
The contractor is scheduled to perform work Monday through Friday from 7:00am to 3:30pm. The beach path will remain open during construction. Efforts will be made to minimize disruptions of use of the existing sports courts. -
