As part of our ongoing commitment to external communications and providing valuable information to our community, the Department posts preliminary information about incidents that occurred the previous evening, including shootings and stabbings, as well as any other LBPD updates to the Department’s homepage and on the “News” tab of the Department’s website. This page will be updated as new incidents occur.

Here’s a recap of incidents occurring last night:

• SWAT Activation and Arrest- 400 Block of East Louise Street: On July 5, 2026, at approximately 3:19 p.m., officers responded to the 400 block of East Louise Street regarding a possible person with a gun. The calling party stated the suspect displayed a firearm. Upon arrival, officers located the male adult suspect who fled into his residence. Officers attempted to deescalate the situation, but suspect was not compliant. The SWAT Team was activated and responded to the scene. After several hours, SWAT personnel took the suspect into custody after deploying pepper gel, less-lethal munitions, and a K9. The suspect was arrested and found to be in possession of a replica firearm. The suspect was transported to a local hospital for medical clearance prior to booking.

  The suspect was identified as Bryan Demetrius Gates Jr., a 27-year-old resident of Long Beach, who was booked for displaying an imitation firearm and obstructing a peace officer.

• Negligent Discharge of a Firearm – 500 Block of Rhea Street: On July 5, 2026, at approximately 11:53 p.m., officers responded to the 500 block of Rhea Street regarding a shooting. Upon arrival, officers contacted a male adult subject with a non-life-threatening, self-inflicted gunshot wound to the lower body. The Long Beach Fire Department personnel transported the subject to a local hospital. The investigation is ongoing.

• No-Hit Shooting – 14th Street and Stanley Avenue: On July 6, 2026, at approximately 3:25 a.m., officers responded to the area of 14th Street and Stanley Avenue regarding a person with a gun call, later determined to be a no-hit shooting. Upon arrival, officers located evidence that a shooting had occurred. No injuries were reported. The suspect fled the scene prior to officer arrival. The investigation is ongoing.

• Traffic Fatality – 1400 Block of Santa Fe Avenue: Detectives are investigating a hit and run traffic collision that occurred on July 6, 2026, which resulted in the death of a male adult pedestrian. The investigation is ongoing.
