Tuberculosis (TB) is caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The bacteria usually attack the lungs, but TB bacteria can attack any part of the body such as the kidney, spine, and brain. Not everyone who gets infected with TB bacteria becomes sick. There are two main conditions related to TB: latent TB infection (LTBI) and TB disease. If not treated properly, TB disease can be fatal.
It's important to understand that not everyone who gets TB bacteria in their system gets sick. Some people get infected but never show any signs of illness, while others do get sick and can pass TB to others. If you think you might have TB, it's crucial to see a doctor as soon as possible.
