The Mark Twain Neighborhood Library opened as the Central Branch Library in February 1930 at 1541 Rose Ave. After several moves, the library was renamed the Mark Twain Branch in 1937, the result of a community naming contest. The library relocated to MacArthur Park in the 1950s, becoming a hub for the most ethnically diverse and most densely populated area in the city for decades. On August 11, 2007 a new 16,000-square-foot library opened across the street from the park. The new library was the first building in Long Beach to receive the Silver Medal LEED Award from the U.S. Green Building Council.
