Long Beach, CA – The City of Long Beach released a Request for Proposals (RFP) today for the operation and management of three pre-security concession opportunities available at Long Beach Airport (LGB).

The rare concession openings at LGB are available as part of a $122 million Phase II Terminal Area Improvements program currently underway to make strategic pre-security enhancements. As part of that effort, two major components were completed in 2022, including the new Ticketing Lobby and Checked Baggage Inspection System (CBIS) facility. A consolidated Baggage Claim opened this spring. Each project builds upon LGB’s status as a first-class gateway to Southern California, holding a special niche in the aviation industry with its easy access, sustainable facilities and welcoming feel for travelers.

The new concessions—businesses that sell consumer goods or services to the public under an agreement with the airport—are expected to open in 2024; however, concession operation start dates are negotiable and may depend on proposed or required facility improvements.

There are not currently any pre-security concessions at LGB. However, the airport has garnered praise for its post-security indoor-outdoor modernizations and local concessions that were part of a $100 million Phase I – Terminal Area Improvement Program completed in 2012.

The three distinct pre-security concession opportunities are:

• New Dining Location in Meeters & Greeters Area: The first concession space with outdoor patio dining will be in the Meeters & Greeters Area next to Baggage Claim. The 1,072-square-foot concession area (not including patio space) might best be occupied by a fast-casual or grab-and-go dining concession staffed and open during airport operating hours.
• Historic Terminal 2nd Floor Former Restaurant: The second concession opportunity is on the second floor of the circa-1941 Historic Terminal, which was a restaurant for several decades after its opening and features carefully preserved Works Progress Administration mosaic tile artwork and airport memorabilia. The restaurant, with an outdoor patio, features views of airplanes taking off and landing at LGB. While it was previously a restaurant, Airport officials are open to other ideas, such as an event space, a co-working space or other purposes for the Streamline Moderne style venue.
• Historic Terminal 1st Floor Alcove Automated Retail: The third concession opportunity is for one smaller space that might be ideal for food and beverage vending machines as well as automated retail machines in the Historic Terminal’s first-floor lobby, which is being renovated and transitioned to house rental car services.

LGB encompasses 1,166 acres and has three runways. It is unique among municipal airports for its diverse portfolio of Class A office buildings, hotels, retail, industrial facilities and a municipal golf course. Air carriers at Long Beach Airport—including Southwest Airlines, Delta Air Lines and Hawaiian Airlines—currently offer service to 24 nonstop destinations around the nation, which is more nonstop service than at any time in LGB’s nearly 100-year history.

Proposal submissions for RFP Number AP-23-287 are due by 11 a.m. on Sept. 27, 2023. Proposals must be submitted electronically via the City’s Long Beach Buys portal.
